Maersk Supply Service (MSS) and Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) are charting a new course in offshore wind farm installations. Through an innovative collaboration, these industry titans are set to launch a groundbreaking windfarm feeder concept aimed at revolutionising the efficiency of wind installations. The brainchild of Danish maritime prowess and American shipbuilding excellence, this venture promises to propel the offshore wind sector into a new era.

A Leap in Offshore Wind Efficiency

Scheduled for a grand debut in 2026, the project's cornerstone is a bespoke feeder spread comprising two tugs and two barges. Crafted by Bollinger Shipyards, a name synonymous with maritime excellence in the U.S., these vessels will bear the ECO flag, embodying a blend of American craftsmanship and global maritime service expertise.

The essence of this newbuild feeder spread lies in its pivotal role in the offshore wind installation process. By transporting wind turbine foundations or components directly to the installation site, the system ensures that the Wind Installation Vessel (WIV) remains on-site for faster, more efficient installations. This strategic approach accelerates installation and significantly shortens wind parks' operational time.

Christian M. Ingerslev, CEO of Maersk Supply Service, underscores the transformative potential of this new installation concept. With an estimated efficiency gain of 30%, the initiative is poised to significantly impact the U.S. offshore wind market and offer a swifter route to offshore wind installations.

The innovation extends beyond speed and efficiency. The specialised solution's locking and stabilising mechanism between the WIV and barge promises to mitigate weather-related delays, a common challenge in offshore operations. This advancement decreases the operational days needed for wind park installations, marking a significant stride in the quest for renewable energy sources.
