DP World has opened its fully modernised South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port. The modernisation and expansion program has been proceeding over the past three years, as part of a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer concession agreed with the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) in 2019.

Interestingly, the terminal's capacity has been doubled from 1.8 million TEU to 4 million TEU thanks to an $800 million refurbishment, and it will be increased to 5 million TEU in the following development phase.

DP World's Cutting-Edge Facility

The 2,150-meter-long quay of the new port has a deep-water quay that is 18 meters deep and can hold up to five ultra-large container ships at once.

Additionally, the terminal's capacity for reefer containers has been increased from 1,200 to 2,340 in response to the increasing demand for perishable cargo. The largest port-centric facility of its kind in Saudi Arabia is DP World's facility, which can inspect up to 75 reefers simultaneously.

The automated and electric yard cranes at the new port are part of DP World's carbon neutrality plan. Within the next five years, the operator stated, the goal is to cut CO2 emissions at the terminal by half. There are also plans to implement water recycling systems, powered trucks, and floating solar platforms.

Since 1999, DP World has operated in the port of Jeddah. Actually, it was the operator's first concession outside its home base in the United Arab Emirates.

Maritime Professional Training courses are essential for anyone looking to work at sea or in related industries since they cover various topics, including navigation, marine engineering, maritime law, and safety.

Jeddah is a Key Logistics Hub

DP World is making additional investments in a sizeable logistics park next to its South Container Terminal because Jeddah is an essential component of Saudi Arabia's international trade. The largest integrated complex of its type in Saudi Arabia is the 415,000 square metre Jeddah Logistics Park.

By providing warehousing, distribution, and goods forwarding services, it will strengthen Jeddah's standing as a major regional trading hub that links Asia, Europe, and Africa. The facility's development is anticipated to be finished by Q2 2026, having started in May of last year.

Jeddah Port has benefited from the liner connection since Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd launched the Gemini Cooperation. Three Saudi ports—Jeddah, Dammam, and Jubail—were given access to five more shipping lines under Gemini.

Furthermore, one of the regional centres for the Gemini collaboration was chosen to be Jeddah. Mundra and Pipavav in India, Tangier in Morocco, Algeciras in Spain, and Port Said in Egypt were among the international terminals that the three Saudi ports were connected to by the new shipping routes.
