SCAT – Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique

Effective shoreline assessment is one of the most critical components of an oil spill response. Accurate evaluation of shoreline conditions enables response teams to prioritise resources, recommend appropriate clean-up methods, minimise environmental impacts, and support efficient recovery operations. The Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique (SCAT) provides a structured and internationally recognised methodology for collecting, documenting, and communicating shoreline information throughout the response lifecycle.

The SCAT – Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique programme by LMA provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of SCAT principles, shoreline survey methodologies, oil persistence, treatment recommendations, and operational decision-making. The course reflects internationally recognised practices and is aligned with the principles of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC 1990), while incorporating established guidance adopted across the global oil spill response community.
