Medical emergencies can occur without warning in maritime workplaces, where immediate access to professional medical assistance may be limited. Personnel working onboard ships, in ports, marine terminals, shipyards, offshore facilities, and other marine environments should possess the knowledge and confidence to provide immediate assistance, minimise the consequences of injury or illness, and support the safety of colleagues until professional medical care becomes available.
The Elementary First Aid (Non-STCW) programme by LMA provides participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to recognise medical emergencies, assess casualties, administer basic first aid, and respond effectively to common workplace injuries and illnesses in maritime environments. The programme has been developed in accordance with internationally recognised first aid principles and reflects relevant guidance contained within the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), the ILO Code of Practice on Accident Prevention on Board Ship at Sea and in Port, and recognised industry best practices. It supports maritime organisations in strengthening emergency preparedness, promoting workplace safety, and enhancing the wellbeing of personnel operating throughout the maritime sector.
