Under a concession agreement with Saudi Global Ports, the Saudi Ports Authority, or Mawani, has started running the container terminal at Jubail Commercial Port. The investment is worth more than SR2 billion ($532 million).
Crucially, the concession agreement between the two parties includes infrastructure development, equipment upgrades, extending quays from 1,000 to 1,400 meters, deepening berths from 14 to 18 meters, increasing ship-to-shore cranes from six to ten, and raising the number of automated eco-friendly rubber-tyred gantry cranes from 13 to 29.
Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Ports Authority, stated that “the commencement of operations at the container terminal in Jubail Commercial Port is the result of deepening partnerships with the private sector and confidence in the Kingdom's investment environment. It contributes to achieving the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.”
He further stated that the project enhances the Kingdom’s competitiveness as a global logistics hub by connecting three continents, supporting supply chain growth and maritime trade, and strengthening Saudi ports' roles in attracting global shipping lines and mega-ships.
The container terminal's capacity, which spans 460,000 square meters, is increased from 1.5 million to 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units per year with the commencement of operations.
Likewise, this makes it possible for the terminal to handle the latest generation of mega-ships, boosts operational effectiveness, and solidifies Jubail Commercial Port's standing as a crucial logistical hub that supports the Kingdom's long-term development.
Additionally, it improves operational integration with the group's terminals in the Eastern Province's ports.

Suliman Al-Mazrou, the president of Mawani, confirmed that the start of operations at the terminal is in line with the authority's plan to improve port operations' efficiency and boost their competitiveness both locally and internationally.
Besides, he emphasised that the development of the infrastructure and logistical services at Jubail Commercial Port in accordance with the highest international standards is made possible by this relationship. In order to promote commerce and international supply chains, he continued, this is an expansion of the strategic alliance with the domestic private sector.
Overall, Jubail Commercial Port is one of the Eastern Province's most important ports, distinguished by its strategic location near industrial cities, which makes it an important hub for supporting export and import movement and supply chain strengthening, in addition to its role in serving national industries and connecting them to regional and global markets.
Maritime Training Academy explores container terminal operations, focusing on managing various logistics aspects such as berth allocation, crane scheduling, and container stacking while utilising Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) to optimise cargo flows, automation, and safety.
This field, often referred to as Container Terminal Operations Management or Port Logistics, intersects logistics, maritime engineering, and industrial management, heavily employing Operations Research (OR) techniques like mathematical modelling, algorithms, and simulation for improved efficiency and terminal performance.
