The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has taken another step towards a more inclusive maritime industry with the launch of the Women in Maritime Association Europe (WIMA Europe). Announced during a regional event in Batumi, Georgia, the new association will strengthen cooperation, expand professional networks, and create new leadership opportunities for women across Europe's maritime sector.
The launch brought together representatives from Maritime Administrations, Governments, Industry, Academia, and International Organizations, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing gender diversity throughout the sector. Supported by the Government of Denmark and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Georgia, WIMA Europe will promote mentoring, knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and regional collaboration to support the professional development of women in maritime.
WIMA Europe becomes the ninth regional Women in Maritime Association established under the IMO Women in Maritime Programme and the first such regional association in Europe. Since launching the initiative in 1988, the IMO has worked to increase the participation of women in the maritime sector through technical cooperation, training, and the development of regional professional networks that strengthen representation in both shore-based and seagoing careers.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the establishment of WIMA Europe marks an important milestone in advancing gender diversity and strengthening leadership across the European maritime sector. By fostering regional cooperation, mentoring, and professional development, the association reinforces the IMO's long-standing commitment to a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global maritime industry.
