HAZCOM 1 – Fundamentals

Effective hazard communication is a fundamental element of safe maritime operations, particularly during activities involving hazardous substances, petroleum products, chemicals, and dangerous goods. Personnel working in ports, terminals, vessels, offshore facilities, and emergency response environments must be able to recognise hazardous materials, interpret safety information, apply appropriate control measures, and communicate risks effectively to prevent incidents and minimise consequences during emergencies.

The HAZCOM 1 – Hazard Communication Fundamentals programme by LMA provides participants with essential knowledge of hazardous substance identification, classification, labelling systems, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), personal protection requirements, and emergency communication procedures. The course is aligned with internationally recognised maritime safety practices, including the principles of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, relevant SOLAS Chapter VII requirements, MARPOL Annex III provisions for harmful substances in packaged form, and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). It prepares participants to support safe operations and effective hazard control within oil spill prevention and emergency response frameworks.
