The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is marking Day of the Seafarer 2026 with a campaign that highlights the challenges faced by the people who keep global trade moving. Under the theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” this year’s observance draws attention to the realities of life at sea and the growing pressures confronting seafarers worldwide.
Recognized annually on 25 June, the Day of the Seafarer celebrates the contribution of maritime professionals to international shipping and global supply chains. In 2026, IMO is placing particular emphasis on the risks associated with operating in increasingly complex environments, including regions affected by conflict, security threats, and geopolitical instability.

The campaign encourages governments, shipping companies, maritime organizations, and training institutions to strengthen support for seafarers through improved safety measures, welfare initiatives, and professional development opportunities. It also highlights the importance of ensuring that those entering the profession are prepared to navigate both operational and personal challenges at sea.
For maritime training providers, the message reinforces the need to equip future seafarers with more than technical competence. Building resilience, leadership, situational awareness, and a strong safety culture has become an essential part of preparing the next generation of maritime professionals.
Through this year’s campaign, IMO is reaffirming that a sustainable shipping industry depends not only on ships and technology, but also on the wellbeing, protection, and development of the people who serve at sea.
