IMO Sounds the Alarm Over Renewed Threats To Shipping in the Red Sea

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has raised serious concerns over renewed attacks targeting international shipping in the Red Sea, warning that such incidents pose a direct threat to seafarers’ lives, maritime security, global trade, and the stability of supply chains.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez strongly condemned the attacks, emphasising that seafarers are civilians performing essential work and must never be placed in harm’s way during periods of conflict and instability. He also reiterated IMO’s commitment to protecting seafarers, ships, and cargoes while calling for de-escalation and enhanced risk assessment by ship operators before transiting the region.

The Red Sea remains a vital maritime corridor for international trade, connecting major shipping routes through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Continued disruptions in the area threaten freedom of navigation, increase operational risks for vessels, and may have wider consequences for global supply chains and maritime commerce.

IMO continues to monitor developments closely and supports international cooperation to strengthen maritime safety and security.
